About the font

The Clarendon font is one of the best and most elegant slab serif typefaces. This typeface falls under the Unicode category as well. This font was released by Thorowgood and a letter foundry called Fann Street Foundry in 1845. The Clarendon Font was the first font to be registered, though the patent expired after 3 years. So a lot of foundries quickly copied this font.

The Clarendon Font was designed by an English typographer called Robert Besley, a partner in the foundry and the Lord Mayor of London in 1869. And then, it was engraved by punchcutter Benjamin Fox, who might have contributed to the font design.

The Clarendon Font has classic “old-times” feels, so it was commonly used on wanted posters of the American Old West. The name “Clarendon” was named after the Clarendon Press in Oxford. This font is available in a total of five weights: light, roman, bold, heavy, and black, as well as condensed styles. This slab-serif font is very popular. It features stylish textures and elegant glyphs. This font has all the basic font styles for the best font pairing.

The Clarendon font has 230 beautiful characters and 462 glyphs. Adobe Fonts included this font for both desktop and web use. This font has a bold and solid structure with less contrast in stroke weight, similar to the letters of “modern” serif typefaces used in the 19th century as body text.

Another typical structure in Clarendon fonts’ design is the bracketed serifs, which become more significant as they reach the primary stroke.

A newer version of this font was reworked and published by Monotype Foundry in 1935. This font has 202 glyphs and 1000 units per EM.

The Clarendon font would go well with Helvetica Neue, League Gothic, Sean, and Futura fonts. Also, Kontiki Fine, Pulpo, and Corona are similar to this font.

Usage

The Clarendon font is the classiest font with wide usability since the 80s. It is perfect for both headings and body text. Designers would love to use this typeface to create creative designs, such as banners, posters, visiting cards, business cards, etc. It is such a clean font that it can satisfy your clients.

Also, the Clarendon font can be used for certificates, documents, presentations, websites, or printing purposes.
