About The Font
The Papyrus font was designed by Boston-based designer Chris Costello in 1982 as a personal project. But later that year, in 1983, it was published by a London-based company, Letraset, who also licensed it for them. The font has become popular because of its use in Microsoft Word, which comes pre-installed. The Papyrus font becomes more exciting when the most commercially successful movie, Avatar, uses the font in the movie title.
Papyrus is a script font that combines the beauty of a traditional Roman letterform with the handwritten look of highly skilled calligraphy. The current owner of this font is the International Typeface Corporation (ITC). However, the designer still receives a certain amount of royalty.
The designer wanted to create a typeface that would look like it was written on papyrus 2000 years ago. The font was designed over six months using calligraphy pens and textured paper. Costello got the inspiration for creating this typeface from the Bible. He wanted to see what a font looked like in Biblical times in the Middle East.
The Papyrus font has 387 characters, 94 glyphs, and 56 languages supported. You can find this TTF font in regular style only. However, it has a lot of things that make it stand out, like uneven curves, rough edges, and horizontal strokes that are higher in capital letters.
But for some unknown reason, it is also the second most hated font. The first font is Comic Sans. One thing that bothers me about the font is how poorly it manages the visual weights within each letter. The font has an even texture that can’t be read when set in body copy. Also, it doesn’t have a lot of options for changes in color or size. Moving the font back and forth while editing the text and previewing the design is pretty challenging.
It is one of the most used fonts in history. Microsoft programs use the font for Windows. Starting from the 10.3 Panther version, released in 2003, macOS also used this font as a part of its basic installation.
You can use this font for your personal or official projects without any doubt. Also, you can use this font on covers, titles, websites, online platforms, and other noted spots. The Papyrus font would look perfect for any design purpose. For example, banners, visiting cards, brochures, etc. As this font looks like an ancient font, you can use it in any historically based TV show.
