Quick answer: Chalkduster is Apple’s chalk-on-a-blackboard font, and it comes built into macOS (it arrived with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard). If you have a Mac, it’s already installed. On Windows or anywhere else, use a free look-alike: Schoolbell matches the letters and Cabin Sketch matches the chalky texture. Both download below.

- Schoolbell has the same round, teacher’s-handwriting letters. Add a light grunge texture in your editor and it’s very close.
- Cabin Sketch has the rough, hatched strokes that make chalk look like chalk. It’s the better pick for big headlines.
- Covered By Your Grace is narrower and feels more like a marker on a whiteboard. It fits long lines better.
- DustyErasers is a public-domain chalk font from fontspace with real dusty edges, in a medium and a light weight. It’s one of the fonts other chalk-font lists point to.
- KG Second Chances by Kimberly Geswein comes in a sketchy and a solid version, popular with teachers. It’s free for personal use only.
It’s probably on your Mac already
Fonts In Use dates the design to 2008, made for Apple, and Apple has shipped Chalkduster with macOS ever since, next to its softer cousin Chalkboard. Open Font Book, search “Chalkduster”, and it should be there, ready for Pages, Keynote, Photoshop or anything else on that Mac.
What you can’t do is copy that file to a Windows PC or share it online. It’s part of Apple’s system software, so it stays on Apple devices. That’s the whole reason Windows users go looking for a free stand-in.
Chalkduster in Canva
For Cricut, install Schoolbell or Cabin Sketch on your computer and restart Design Space; they appear under System fonts. If Chalkduster isn’t in your Canva font menu, upload Schoolbell or Cabin Sketch through Brand Kit (Canva Pro or Teams), or type your words on a Mac in Chalkduster, export a transparent PNG and drop it into the design.
Making it look like a real blackboard
Chalk fonts look best in white or pastel on a dark green or charcoal background, with a touch of dust around the letters. It’s a natural fit for classroom worksheets, back-to-school posts, café menus and specials boards. Keep the text short and big, and pair it with a clean sans for small print.

Chalkduster questions
Is Chalkduster a free font?
It’s free to use on a Mac because it comes with macOS, but it isn’t free to download or share. Schoolbell and Cabin Sketch are free for everyone.
Can I use Chalkduster on Windows?
Not legally. Apple’s system fonts are meant for Apple devices. On Windows, install one of the free look-alikes from this page.
What is the difference between Chalkduster and Chalkboard?
Both are Apple fonts. Chalkboard is clean and comic-like, while Chalkduster has the rough, dusty edges of real chalk.
