Brat Font

The Brat font is a plain narrow sans serif. Charli XCX’s 2024 album cover is widely reported to use Arial Narrow in lowercase black letters, set on a slime-green square. Sources do not agree on every detail, so treat Arial Narrow as the best match, and nothing more.

About the Brat font

The lettering is the whole point of the cover. The word “brat” sits in the middle in lowercase, a little blurry, like a low-quality screenshot. That rough look is what made the cover easy to copy and easy to joke about online.

The artwork is credited to Brent David Freaney at the New York studio Special Offer, Inc., according to press coverage of the release in June 2024. Freaney reportedly went through hundreds of greens before choosing the final one. Some outlets describe the type as stretched Arial, so the exact setup has not been confirmed by the artist.

That is why “brat” became a style as well as a title. Anyone with a basic sans serif and a green background can make it. You can read the original write-up on Fonts In Use.

Arial Narrow and where to get it

Arial Narrow

Arial Narrow is a condensed version of Arial, published by Monotype. It is a commercial font. It comes installed with many versions of Microsoft Office and Windows, so you may already have it. If you do not, you cannot legally grab it from a random download site. Check your Office install first, or buy a license from Monotype or a font store.

The Brat title card and merch are the label’s artwork, and the “brat” cover design belongs to its owners. Copying the style for a fan edit or a school project is fine. Selling products that look like official merch is a different matter.

Using the look in your own projects

The Brat look spread far beyond the album. Fans remade the cover with their own words, brands and even pets, and the format became a meme within days. The trick is restraint. If you add a second font, a gradient or a drop shadow, the joke stops working.

If you are making a poster, pick a short word. One word in lowercase reads best, and a single line at a small size can work as a caption underneath. Print projects should use a proper vector export, since a stretched screenshot looks wrong at poster size.

How to make Brat-style text

  • Use all lowercase. Write “brat” with a small b.
  • Pick a slime or lime green for the background, and plain black for the text. Many fan recreations start near #8ACE00, then adjust by eye.
  • Keep the type centered, with no outline, no shadow and no extra decoration.
  • Export your design, shrink it, then scale it back up. The soft, blurry edge comes from low resolution, not from a special effect. In Canva you can also nudge the text width wider than normal for a stretched feel.
