When Was Didot Font Created?
Didot is a famous font named after the renowned Didot family in France. Firmin Didot created Didot in 1784. The letters were cut from metal and cast as type in Paris. From 1784 to 1811, Firmin and his brother developed the famous Didot typeface. Didot became instantly popular in printing presses when his brother Pierre Didot used them for printing.
The Didot family had a reputation for printing. The business was first started by Firmin Didot’s grandfather. They were a dynasty of French printers, punch-cutters, and publishers. Eventually, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte made him the director of the Imprimerie Impériale type foundry. Currently, it is known as the IN Group in France. He was credited with establishing the use of modern serif typefaces called Didone.

Didot is a serif neoclassical font. It was made to evoke the Age of Enlightenment. There have been many attempts to revive and recreate this typeface for modern times. Only a few succeeded. It was Adrian Fruitger from Linotype Foundry and Jonathan Hoefler from H&FJ were the most successful of them. Fruitger’s Didot revival is bundled with MacOS. Didot has been used for Vogue’s cover title since 1955. Observations, Richard Avedon’s first monograph, was designed in 1959 by Alexey Brodovitch with Didot as the typeface. Along with its famous “eye” logo, CBS commissioned and adopted the “CBS Didot” version of Didot for many years.
In January 2019, ZARA rebranded itself, causing a design controversy. Fabien Baron, the creative mind who designed the updated logo, used his signature style to rebrand fashion’s powerhouse. Using the serif Didot font with no spaces, the four letters are written in all caps.
