The Lord of the Rings title lettering from the films is custom, not a standard font. The closest widely used match is Ringbearer, a fan-made font. If you want to write in Elvish, look for Tengwar fonts. For a safe free pick, try Cinzel on Google Fonts.
About the Lord of the Rings font
The films by Peter Jackson (2001 to 2003) use a title with sharp, flowing, carved letters. J.R.R. Tolkien’s books show a different look, and the many cover editions each carry their own lettering.
Two things make the style: swashes that curl off the ends of letters, and a mix of capitals and small capitals. Ringbearer was made to copy the movie logo. One source credits Pete “The Hutt” Klassen and dates the Medium weight to 2002. We could not check that on the designer’s own page, so treat it as reported, not confirmed.
Ringbearer, Tengwar and where to get them
Ringbearer
Ringbearer is a fan font, not an official one. Licenses are listed differently across sites, some as personal use only. Read the file’s license before using it in paid work. We also cover it on our Ringbearer font page.
Tengwar fonts
Tengwar is the Elvish script that Tolkien invented. It is not a language, it is a way of writing sounds. Several free Tengwar fonts exist, such as Tengwar Annatar. You can browse many of them on FontSpace’s Tolkien category. Licenses differ, so check each one.
The Lord of the Rings name, the logo and the film artwork belong to their rights holders. The Tolkien estate and Middle-earth Enterprises hold the trademarks. Fan posters are fine. Selling merch with the logo is not.
Using the look in your own projects
Fantasy lettering usually works best when it is quiet. Tolkien’s maps and book pages are mostly clean serif text, with the decorated lettering saved for titles and inscriptions. If every word on your poster is fancy, nothing stands out.
If you are making a tabletop campaign handout, split the roles. Use a display font for the title, a readable serif for the body, and a Tengwar font only for a short inscription. Add a note with the English meaning, because readers cannot decode Tengwar by sight. Titles in this style also look best with a little extra space between letters.
